African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has signed a US$500 million term loan facility with the Central Bank of Tunisia, acting on behalf of Tunisia’s Ministry of Finance, to support the country’s key socio-economic priorities and strengthen its financial resilience.

The agreement was signed at Afreximbank’s headquarters in the presence of Dr. George Elombi, President and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Afreximbank, and Dr. Fethi Zouhaier Nouri, Governor of the Central Bank of Tunisia, alongside senior officials from both institutions.

The facility comes in addition to the US$1.2 billion previously disbursed by Afreximbank to the Central Bank of Tunisia. The financing will help the Tunisian government meet maturing trade debt obligations, fund imports of essential goods including fuel, fertilizers, and food products, and improve access to foreign currency liquidity.

Commenting on the agreement, Dr. George Elombi said the facility underscores Afreximbank’s commitment to supporting Tunisia’s sustainable economic development and advancing Africa’s broader growth agenda. He emphasized the importance of African institutions taking a leading role in financing the continent’s development.

For his part, Dr. Fethi Zouhaier Nouri highlighted the significance of the partnership at a time when trade finance and foreign currency liquidity remain critical to sustaining essential imports. He noted that the facility reflects the value of cooperation among African financial institutions in addressing shared economic priorities and strengthening national resilience.

Through its trade finance, project finance, and liquidity support solutions, Afreximbank continues to play a key role in helping African economies strengthen trade resilience, secure essential imports, and expand participation in both intra-African and global trade.
