November 2026 promises astronomy enthusiasts a series of striking celestial events, as meteor showers and conjunctions of the moon and planets occur throughout the month, while what is known in the media as the (supermoon) adorns the skies of Saudi Arabia and the Arab world, alongside unique opportunities to observe bright planets and distant celestial bodies.
The head of the Astronomical Society in Jeddah, Engineer Majid Abu Zahra, explained that the moon will go through its main phases during the month, starting with the last quarter on November 1, then the new moon on the 9th, the first quarter on the 17th, before reaching full moon status on the evening of November 24. He indicated that the full moon coincides relatively with the moon's approach to the perigee point in its orbit around the Earth, making it appear larger and brighter compared to the full moon near the apogee, in a phenomenon known in the media as the (supermoon), although it is not an official astronomical term.
Abu Zahra pointed out that the dawn sky will witness on November 7 the approach of the waning crescent moon to the planet Venus, while from November 13 to 22, there will be an opportunity to see the planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, and Jupiter distributed across the eastern horizon just before sunrise, with improved observation conditions for Mercury as it approaches its greatest western elongation on November 21. He added that observers will be able to follow a distinctive celestial formation at dawn on November 22, gathering Mars, Jupiter, and the star Regulus in a nearly isosceles triangle shape, in a scene visible to the naked eye.
In terms of meteor activity, the month will see the Southern Taurids shower, while the Northern Taurids will peak on the night of November 11 and 12, followed by the Leonids shower on the night of November 17 and 18, with the possibility of seeing a number of meteors varying based on sky clarity, light pollution levels, and weather conditions. The moon will also appear near the planet Saturn on the evening of November 20, before passing by the Pleiades cluster and the star Aldebaran on November 24 and 25, while the planet Uranus reaches opposition with the sun at dawn on November 26, making it visible for most hours of the night, with binoculars or telescopes recommended for observation.
Abu Zahra noted that November is one of the best times to observe the Andromeda Galaxy, which is about 2.5 million light-years away, as it can be seen from dark locations away from city lights as a faint, hazy patch, while binoculars reveal clearer details. He emphasized the importance of choosing observation sites far from light pollution, monitoring weather conditions, and giving the eyes enough time to adjust to the darkness, noting that most of the anticipated astronomical phenomena during the month can be observed with the naked eye, while optical tools help highlight additional details of faint celestial bodies.
