Newcastle United coach, German Matthias Jaissle, expressed his understanding of the boos from his team's fans following the loss to Aston Villa by a goal to nil at St. James' Park, confirming that the fans were looking forward to a victory and that his team failed to meet their expectations.
Johann Manzambi scored the only goal of the match with a header in the 36th minute, leaving Newcastle unable to compensate for their previous loss to Coventry City with a score of 1-4, managing only one shot on target against Aston Villa, which was saved by goalkeeper Zion Suzuki from Sven Botman at the start of the second half.
Jaissle said during the press conference after the match: "We feel frustrated with the result, and we wanted to deliver a better outcome for our fans at home. I believe the reaction was present, especially until receiving the goal; we controlled the match, but without consistent presence in the opponent's penalty area, and this is an aspect we need to develop."
The German coach admitted that his team was somewhat shaken after the goal, before regaining their energy and confidence at the beginning of the second half, explaining: "We felt the desire to at least equalize, and perhaps win, but the effectiveness inside the opponent's penalty area was absent."
Jaissle pointed out that Newcastle's performance between the penalty areas was solid, and that the team showed improvement in duels and aggression against a strong opponent, adding: "Our decisions in the final third were not good enough to create more chances and increase our effectiveness, and even the few chances we had to score were not capitalized on."
Regarding the boos, he said: "The fans were hoping for a different result like us, and that is their right. They come to celebrate with the team after 90 minutes, and it’s better to do that by earning three points, but we did not achieve that for them today, and this is a natural occurrence in football."
He emphasized that the responsibility of the coaching staff and players now focuses on working during the week, addressing shortcomings, and developing young players, in an effort to achieve a different result in the next match.
